For this task I experimented with ai by trying to generate images based on 1) a photograph I had taken, 2) one of Cindy Sherman's film stills and 3) creating a film still from scratch. I found that it is possible to achieve results that are quite similar to the originals, but this only worked when I was extremely specific about every single detail in the prompt. I also had to reiterate myself a lot to get an image with the right composition. Even then, the outcomes never fully matched the real photographs often looking very artificial and cartoon-ish which highlighted the difference between ai's ability and authentic photography. ​

Although the generated images don’t compare to the originals, I do think that ai is still a useful tool when used correctly in the creative process. It could be especially valuable for creating inspiration images, testing ideas for future shoots, and planning shots. Overall, this experiment highlighted the limitations with image generation as I see it as more of a supportive tool rather than a replacement for photography.
