For this shoot I experimented with different techniques for shooting still life in the studio, including a range of lighting techniques like, silhouette, rim lighting, butterfly, and split lighting. Using a variety of props including ceramics, telephones, wood, vases and flowers, and fairy lights, I experimented with how light effects their appearance and which techniques work best for their shape, colour, and size. I particularly like the images where I have used split lighting with two different colours on ceramics, I think the contrasting colours work well in creating dimension in the image and adding depth to the object. It was also interesting to see the effect of shadows and how their direction can change the appearance of an object. Something I struggled with was bokeh lighting, I needed a very low aperture for the foreground objects to be in focus and the lights to be blurry however, I couldn't get it low enough while also having a well exposed image, I did however, experiment with shooting just the lights and managed to achieve the bokeh effect there. I also used reflectors to try bouncing light back onto objects and I found this to be interesting as I could see how much of a difference it made when it was there as opposed to not. I was able to see the effect of the number of light sources have on an image and the additional shadows that are then created. In addition to the still life shoot, I also experimented with using strobe flash to capture movement in water. I dropped ink drops into water and captured their different colours, shapes, and patterns and I think it turned out well. It also allowed me to gain more experience using a strobe flash as that is a new technique for me.
